Sam Smith Covers Tracy Chapman

Grab a hanky.

Once again, Sam Smith has found a new, beautiful way to bring us all to tears. The "Stay With Me" singer, whose songs about unrequited love and loneliness are more affecting than watching Terms of Endearment while Clapton's "Tears in Heaven" plays on loop, covered Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car" yesterday on the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge.

Smith's cover of Chapman's song about the cycle of generational poverty is as poignant and reverent as it needs to be. He handles the chorus especially well. Though I was given pause when I remembered that he's the son of a high-powered London financier, he clearly respects the material, so knowing that won't stop you from enjoying Smith's take on the track.
