Catching Up With: The Fabulous Beekman Boys

Since their hit reality series, The Fabulous Beekman Boys ended its second season earlier this year, the Beekman Boys (or Brent and Josh as they are known in the real world) have been furiously (and fabulously) shaping their Beekman 1802 company into the empire it was meant to be. They sat down to talk with OUT about their new cookbook, The Beekman 1802 Heirloom Cookbook, their new holiday collection, and why Kim Kardashian is keeping them from walking down the aisle.

OUT: How long have you been working on the cookbook?

Josh: We worked on it for about a year and a half, which is fairly quick for a cookbook.

Brent: We had a head start because a lot of these were variations on family recipes, so we weren't starting out from scratch, so that's how we were able to put it out so quickly.

OUT: Did you always want the concept of being able to scribble in notes along with the recipes, thus making it someone's personal cookbook?

B: Any product we design from our company we always try to design with some added value to it, or some heirloom quality to it, and we really wanted to create a book that people would use a lot. That peoiple would treause and pass down to future generations. It's the Keepsake Edition so everything, the paper its printed on, the binding, everything would have that sense of history to it.

OUT: Are there a couple favorite recipes on the farm?

J: The Butternut Squash-Filled Lasagna Rolls.

B: Or if company's coming over, the apple cake is always a favorite.

OUT: Who came up with the cookbook interactive component to Beekman1802.com?

J: Well, everything we do is interactive on the site, so it was really trying to find a way to use old media in a new way, so many of the people who follow us online, talk with one another, so we wanted a place for them to go and share the cookbook together.

B: the inspiration was the old church cookbooks, where you would have various recipes from the churchgoers and it would be a collection.

OUT: Do you both cook?

B: Yup, I have better taste, he (points to Josh) has better skills.

OUT: With the website and the cookbook, whats coming up next for Beekman 1802?

B: Well, we're always trying to come up with new products. We have some new products for the holidays, we're doing our first Evergreen collection, we're doing our heirloom fruit cake, we have our new beauty product, called Lump of Coal which is an amazing detox bar that uses goat milk and bamboo charcoal.

OUT: Will The Fabulous Beekman Boys be returning for another season?

J: We're in negotiations for a third season. We're talking to a few networks now.

OUT: Do people ask you when you're going to get married, now that gay marriage is legal in New York?

B: Yes, but we're only going to get married when it can be televised. I want helicopters, even if we have to pay for them ourselves. I want our wedding to be bigger than Kim Kardashian's!

The Beekman 1802 Heirloom Cookbook is out now.
