Our favorite Golden Girl has been knocking around since 1922, and Monday night NBC rolled out the red carpet, packed the house with celebrities, and celebrated nine (count them: nine!) decades in style.
On camera for Betty White's 90th Birthday: A Tribute to America's Golden Girl, White joked, "I'm not trying to be any younger. I'm not lying about my age. If I were lying about my age, I would say I was 89."
Who cares, you ask? Apparently 14 million people, who tuned in to make it the most-watched show in that time slot since early 2008, not counting the Olympics. Following the special was the premiere episode of White's new hidden camera show, Off Their Rockers.
Last night's birthday extravaganza was attended by celebrities like Mary Tyler Moore and Carol Burnett, plus younger comedians such as Ellen DeGeneres, Amy Poehler, Jay Leno, and Tina Fey. Actors including Hugh Jackman and Morgan Freeman were there and even President Obama recorded a message for the evening's honoree where he informed White that she had better have her birth certificate on hand.
White was roasted throughout the night by comedians, receiving an impromptu marriage proposal and being informed by Amy Poehler that "You're going to hear a lot of jokes tonight about your age. But take comfort in the fact that come tomorrow, you won't remember any of them." Betty took it all with her usual grace and sense of humor, and even gave as good as she got.
