Minnelli, Midler, whatever Cher's last name is. There is no denying the appeal of the classics. Of drag, that is.
And San Diego drag gem Chad Michaels would certainly agree. He's ridden his uncanny knack for impersonating Cher all the way to the top of the food chain: RuPaul's Drag Race.
Or "drag Disneyland" as he described it in a dishy interview with his hometown alt weekly San Diego City Beat.
Michaels, who has spent the last 20 years as a female impersonator, will be one of the 13 drag queens competing for the coveted top prize. Every season needs its "seasoned" cast member and Michaels is definitely happy to fill the role, but that doesn't mean you can call him a she.
Unlike many queens, Michaels prefers his male name and doesn't have a made-up alter ego.
"I had a drag name when I first started. It was Brigitte Love, and I always felt weird about it because I didn't identify with the character," he said.
That doesn't mean there won't be any of that old fashioned drag queen fun that we tune in for. Maybe even more.
"The cash prize is $100,000, so the girls were out for blood," Michaels said.
And with the ante upped like that, they no doubt were. All the more reason to tune into Logo on Mondays at 9 starting January 30.
