It will soon be time to give a tearful farewell to everyone's favorite purple-haired Australian lady because the man behind the cat eye glasses of Dame Edna has decided that the next stage show, titled Eat, Pray, LAUGH!, will be his last.
Barry Humphries is also known for his other characters such as Sir Les, but Dame Edna is by far the most recognizable and beloved. At 78, the performer plans to end his career on stage, but hints that we may not have seen the last of Dame Edna.
"Edna will crop up on television, I guess, but not in a live show," he said in an interview with The Sunday Telegraph.
Since leaping onto the radar in the 1980s, Humphries' character has become a star in his native Australia, the U.K., and stateside, as well as elsewhere around the globe. And though Humphries has no complaints about his fame, he may be on a path similar to the one taken by his lady alter ego.
"She's on a journey to find herself, to lose the trappings of mega-stardom and become a real person," he said.
We wish Humphries all the luck in the world with his future endeavors and bid him a heartfelt Goodbye possums!
