Romney's Gay Spokesman Doesn't Like the Ladies

Richard Grenell's (unscrubbed) Twitter history reveals a lot of empty-headed sexism

Mitt Romney is at the top of our list of many things: Person we'd call for investment advice; person to call about the best way to outfit a yacht; the guy we'd avoid calling when in need of a dog sitter. But list of people gay men and women would love to work for?

Uh-uh. Maybe not that last one. Unless you're Richard Grenell.

A former spokesman under George W. Bush, Grenell has been hired as foreign policy spokesperson for the staunchly anti-equality Romney campaign. Despite the fact that Grenell, who is a Republican, is openly gay. And despite his having once told The Advocate: "I think the status quo is the enemy here," when he faced unequal treatment thanks to the Defense of Marriage Act. Maybe he just hasn't been paying much attention?

But politics being politics, you can't fault the guy for wanting to work for an amiable, relatable, total everyman politician like Mitt Romney. But if you're interested in faulting him, you can join the people who've questioned Grendell's rather unsavory history of making misogynistic, often catty remarks about women in the spotlight. Most notably, Grenell has taken to Twitter on several occasions to insult such famous political women as Michelle Obama, Callista Gingrich, and Hillary Clinton. And even the odd entertainer, like when he poked fun at Jessica Simpson's body.

And if you'd assume having a guy like Grenell might hurt a campaign already lacking in female support, you'd probably be right. Huffington Post has reported that since Grenell joined the Romney camp, 818 comments have very conspicuously vanished from his Twitter account.

But don't worry. The Internet never forgets.
