Bluewater Productions has previously released biographical comic books about Stephen Hawking, Madonna and even Honey Boo Boo. They're also the company behind Lost Raven, a compelling tale of one man's acceptance of his HIV positive status. Now the small, California-based publishing house is turning its attention to the birth of the modern gay rights movement with a one-off, limited edition title called The Stonewall Riots.
"As time goes on, we're in danger of losing this important touchstone of our cultural history," said writer Michael Troy. "In an age where gay rights and marriage equality are still such hot buttons, it's more important now more than ever, to remember the efforts of those who fought for gay rights."
To meet their goal, Troy, artist David T. Cabrera and Bluewater Productions President Darren G. Davis are fundraising through the crowd sourcing site Indiegogo. Their goal is to raise $9,000 before July 11. But they're not looking for simple handouts: depending on how much they give, donors will receive gifts A $35 donation, for example, will receive a special, limited edition copy, while those who give $300 can have 75 copies of the comic donated to an organization of their choice. This could either be a school, to teach kids about gay history, or maybe you want to send some to the National Organization for Marriage, just for kicks? It's really up to you.
For a better idea of what this book will look like, here's Blue Water's pitch video, 5 pages from The Stonewall Riots, and the title's two covers. The second one is very reminiscent of Alan Moore's classic comic Watchmen, no?
