According to a Spotify poll, many Americans have been mishearing one of Elton John's greatest hits as "Hold me closer Tony Danza", and thinking they hear Jimi Hendrix sing, "Scuse me, while I kiss this guy" in "Purple Haze," (It's actually, "Hold me closer, Tiny Dancer," and "Scuse me, while I kiss the sky.") Other commonly misquoted songs include The Clash's Rock the Casbah ("Rock the Cat Box") and TLC's "Waterfalls" ("Don't go Jason Waterfalls"). But the winner by a mile was "Blinded by the Light" by Manfred Mann's Earth Band. Fifty-two percent of respondents reported hearing "Wrapped up like a douche/when you're rollin' in the night" instead of, "Revved up like a deuce/another runner in the night."
Meanwhile, over in the UK, "Sweet Dreams are made of... Cheese?" Apparently, many music fans in Britain have long labored under the impression that Annie Lennox is a curd nerd, extolling her love of cheese in the famous Eurythmics song, "Sweet Dreams." In the UK version of the poll, 28 respondents picked it as the most misquoted song in the nation. It was closely followed by Rihanna's "We Found Love," with listeners under the impression that the Barbadian singer found "Dove in a soapless place." Now that's just ridiculous.
