With only five days to go until they reach their Kickstarter deadline--and about $100,000 needed for completion--Adam Goldman and the Rascal Department, the team that brought us The Outs, have posted the pilot for their new project, Whatever this is.
Starring some of the same cast as The Outs, including the Sasha Winters and Hunter Canning, as well as newcomers Dylan Marron and Madeline Wise, this series follows a group of New Yorkers as they wade through no-paying jobs in the big city, something to which many of us can relate. The first episode, which the Rascals screened at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn last night, shows the team muddling through reality show hell--and hellish reality--just to afford wilted lettuce. We've all been there.
I briefly spoke with Goldman at the screening, and he said that where The Outs was a stand-alone narrative, he envisions Whatever this is as an ongoing story. "We want to make television," he said, as opposed to something that's pigeonholed as an online anomaly.
To that end, Goldman has completed four scripts of what he hopes will be a six-episode season. But that won't happen without some help from his friends, and a bunch of other folks he sources via the Internet, so watch this episode and, if you like it, head on over to Kickstarter to show your support.
