College Offering Course on RuPaul’s Drag Race
While RuPaul's Drag Raceseason 6 is still months away, one school is offering a chance to study up on all things Ru.
Occidental College, a liberal arts institution in Los Angeles, has a new course called "Reading RuPaul: Camp Culture, Gender Insubordination, and the Politics of Performance." The course will study queer and feminist theories through the eyes of the LOGO television series.
And honey, the library is open.
Not only will students be required to "read," or rather, watch the show but the course will also incorporate films, such as Paris Is Burning, and RuPaul's recent book, Workin' It.
Before you start thinking the class is all fun and no shade, it's meant to take a deeper look at queer identities in culture.
"The overarching premise is to 'read' RPDR as an example of the creative techniques that marginalized people use to grapple with the violence, shame, and social illegitimacy that are the stuff of daily life," says Daniel Williford, who is teaching the course in the spring.
"Students will be encouraged to critique this premise of the class and the show itself," he adds. "But they will have to do so by immersing themselves in it."
Ooh gurl, things are about to get fishy.
