The rapper was (and still is) a tastemaker
In 2010, Nicki Minaj was the hottest, newest female rapper to grace the hip-hop scene. With her bubble gum sex appeal and penchant for wigs, Minaj was a welcome mix of Lil' Kim and Lady Gaga. Thanks to the release of the catchy single, "Check It Out," which sampled "Video Killed The Radio Star," she not only slayed her counterparts but quickly topped the charts. A month later, she graced the cover of Out's October issue as one of the Tastemakers of the year.
"I was definitely one of those girls where you heard me before you saw me," Minaj said at the time. But in the case of her photo shoot with the magazine, she was definitely seen as well as heard.
Little did anyone know at the time was that those towering wigs she donned would become a part of her signature look. Since then she has reportedly spent $40,000 a month on hair care alone. Whew, that's a lot of money, but then again she knows how to werk it. (Forget American Idol, someone get her onRuPaul's Drag Race.)
