In the new video for "We Exist," Arcade Fire taps Andrew Garfield for the lead role in a tale of gender identity with the Spider-Man star portraying a young person trying to come to terms with being transgender.
The video plays on the lyrics that seem to embrace a transgender person's struggle: "Daddy it's true, I'm different from you / But tell me why they treat me like this? / You turn away, what could I say / Not the first betrayed by a kiss"
In the video, Garfield shaves his head, dons women's clothing, and even attempts to socialize at a bar as a woman but ends up getting harassed and bullied. Ultimately, Garfield finds inner peace and exits the bar--walking through a crowd of fans at an Arcade Fire concert in similar fashion to the way John Cameron Mitchell did at the end of the film version of Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
