A new annual television event, "Trailblazers" on Logo TV premieres on June 26, during the most historic week for gay rights. Through the years, this week of June has seen the Stonewall Riots, and the overruling of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).
"Trailblazers" celebrates the first anniversary of the overturn, and pays homage to the DOMA challengers Edie Windsor and Roberta Kaplan.
In 2009, the IRS compelled Windsor to pay $363,053 in estate taxes after her wife's death, a price surviving hetero spouses don't need to shell out. Standing up against the injustice, Windsor and her attorney Kaplan fought legal battles for four years, taking the case up to the Supreme Court.
Finally in 2013, The United States v. Windsor joined the ranks of America's equality milestones, alongside the civil rights act, and women's suffrage. The government now recognizes same sex marriage and offers them equal federal benefits protection.
In celebration of equality, "Trailblazers," will also be honoring a year of "firsts," including the first openly gay professional athletes.
"Trailblazers" will be presented by longtime supporter of the Trevor Project, Daniel Radcliffe, and will be held at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, one of the first New York churches to perform same sex weddings.
A whole cast of special guests and performances will be gracing the stage, including Jared Leto, Kylie Minogue, Ariana Grande, Tyler Glenn of Neon Trees, and A Great Big World. Personal stories from viewers across the country will also be displayed.
The one-hour special premieres June 26 at 9 PM EST.
