At Logo TV's inaugural Trailblazer Awards, Matthew Shepard's mother Judy and Lance Bass will honor Jason Collins. The award is in recognition of Collins historic achievement of becoming the first out player in the NBA, helping the New York Nets close out the 2013-2014 season.
While playing with the Nets, Collins wore a number 98 jersey to mark the year that Shepard was killed for being gay. Collins met Judy and the rest of Matthew's family when he presented them with a signed copy of his jersey earlier this season. In addition to his achievements on the court, Collins has also become the face of Nike's "Be True" sportswear line, marched in Boston's pride parade, and even advised Michael Sam before coming out ahead of the NFL draft.
Other honorees at Logo's televised event include Edith Windsor and attorney Roberta Kaplan, who led the charge in the case against that Defense of Marriage Act brought on by the death of Windsor's partner Thea Spyer, and the hit series Orange Is the New Black.
OITNB recently returned to Netflix with its second season and was also awarded Outstanding Comedy Series at the 25th GLAAD Media Awards.
The Trailblazers ceremony will air at 9 p.m. EST on Logo on June 26, exactly one year after DOMA was overturned by the Supreme Court.
