The videos popping up all over social media of people dumping buckets of ice water on their heads aren't some last-ditch effort to cool off as summer winds down, but a charity campaign that has become a viral movement across the country.
Pennslyvania Rep. Brian Sims is one of the many high profile people adding some star-power to the effort started by Boston College baseball player Pete Frates several months ago. Frates was diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, in 2012.
Since last month, the movement has gained attention on social media platforms with the hashtags #IceBucketChallenge and #StrikeOutALS and a growing number of celebrities that are participating in the teeth-chattering challenge for charity. When someone is challenged to participate, they must either donate at least $100 to the ALS Association, or dump a bucket of ice water on their heads -- many celebrities are good sports and do both. With the likes of Justin Timberlake, Lance Bass, Elizabeth Banks, Ansel Elgort, Matt Lauer, and Martha Stewart accepting challenges and challenging other celebrities right back, don't expect an end to the videos anytime soon.
