Choreographer Christopher Wheeldon has been exploring classic tales in his recent work, such as his recent Cinderella ballet, and now he's bringing his over-the-top interpretation of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland to a wider audience when the Joyce Theater Foundation and the National Ballet of Canada presents the ballet at Lincoln Center Sept. 9-14. For a taste of the fantastical stylings of Wheeldon, check out the Alice sets and costumes by Tony Award-winning designer Bob Crowley.
Today the cast was announced, and the title role of Alice will be performed by Principal Dancers Jillian Vanstone and Sonia Rodriguez and First Soloist Elena Lobsanova. Jack/The Knave of Hearts will be danced by Principal Dancer Guillaume Cote and First Soloist Naoya Ebe. Making his debut in the role is new Principal Dancer Evan McKie. The role of Lewis Carroll/The White Rabbit will be performed by Second Soloist Dylan Tedaldi, Principal Dancer Piotr Stanczyk and First Soloist Robert Stephen. Principal Dancers Greta Hodgkinson and Xiao Nan Yu will dance the role of Mother/The Queen of Hearts and making her debut in the role is new Principal Dancer Svetlana Lunkina.
This is Wheeldon's first stop of the artistic season, since he will be making his Broadway directorial debut in March 2015 with a production of An American in Paris. Inspired by the Academy Award-winning film, the musical opens on Broadway following its world premiere at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris (previews begin in Paris Nov. 22, 2014 for Dec. 10, 2014 opening night).
