Many NFL fans were unhappy that OWN was trailing Michael Sam for a docuseries, and some claimed that the Oprah-produced TV event is what hurt his chances at being drafted. After much criticism, the entire thing was shelved. Now, the Oprah Winfrey Network announced that they will indeed air its exclusive documentary on NFL free agent and former Saint Louis Ram, Michael Sam.
The film, titled Michael Sam, is directed by Emmy-nominated filmmaker Amy Rice (Lindsay, By The People: The Election of Barack Obama), will focus on the former Mizzou college football star as he begins his professional career and jockeys for a spot on an NFL team. Originally meant to be a multi-part series, the new version will be a 90-minute movie when filming was postponed to let Sam focus on football.

According to a press release, Sam speaks openly about his difficult childhood, replete with tragedy and poverty, as well as his decision to come out. The documentary also captures the moment when Sam was drafted to the Rams and delves into the media scrutiny that ensued. Additionally, Rice's film will explore Sam's relationship with his boyfriend Vito. After the documentary, Oprah will speak with Sam for his first interview since getting cut from the Dallas Cowboy's practice quad.
Michael Sam will air on OWN, Saturday, Dec. 27 at 9 p.m. ET.
