You know how your New Yorkers just sorta, well, pile up? How do you pack an issue of the magazine into a digestible half-hour segment? In the new Amazon pilot, The New Yorker Presents, Alex Gibney's Jigsaw Productions tries to do just that by including short bits that translate articles and columns into engaging video segments.
For example, the short film starring Alan Cumming as God and Brett Gelman (The Other Guys) as his "prophet" is sort of like a "Shouts & Murmurs" column made flesh. Based on an original story by Simon Rich, and directed by Troy Miller, it's an amusing riff that feels like it could work as a Portlandia skit. That's followed by an interview with Marina Abramovic by Ariel Levy, a documentary by Academy Award-winning director Jonathan Demme about biologist Tyrone Hayes based on a Rachel Aviv article, and a poem by Matthew Dickman narrated by Andrew Garfield.
