1. It's been a rough week for Sam Smith. First, he was called "an ugly motherfucker" by Howard Stern, who also asked listeners: "You know what I like about the guy? He's fat, I love it." Sam then posted a shirtless selfie on Instagram, writing, "I say what's on my mind. I might do a little time." Then it was reported that he amicably settled a copyright dispute with Tom Petty over the likeness between Smith's three-time Grammy-nominated "Stay With Me" and Petty's "I Won't Back Down" hit. Smith's reps confirmed that "Stay With Me" is now co-credited to Petty and Lynne, adding that while there are undeniable "similarities" between the two singles, it was a "complete coincidence." 2. I Am Michael, Justin Kelly's film starring James Franco as ex-gay preacher Michael Glatze, premiered at Sundance. Richard Lawson wrote that it's "burdened by a script that's awkwardly paced and ridden with cliches," but he gives credit "at least to Zachary Quinto and Teen Wolf hunk Charlie Carver (yes!) for turning thinly drawn characters into real people." 3. A study by Kink University has named Portland the "Kinkiest City" in the United States. The study evaluated the BDSM, fetish, and polyamorous factors of the 50 largest cities in the United States, and the Pacific Northwest hotspot beat out New York, San Francisco, and D.C. [Kink.com]
4. Composer Alan Menken has announced that he and Harvey Fierstein are adapting Mrs. Doubtfire into a stage musical. "It's going very well, it's in its early stages, and that's probably all I can say," Menken says. "We're really enjoying working on it." [EW]
