Jason Collins, 34, will now play out the rest of the current season as a Brooklyn Net. He had been signed to two successive 10-day deals with the team, and since then the Nets "feel they're getting everything they expected from Collins when they signed him for frontcourt depth," according ESPN. Their sources say that the Nets' internal expectation was that he'd finish out the season. Since playing with the Nets he's averaged 9.8 minutes per game.
Writes ESPN, "Collins' No. 98 jersey has become a top-seller and he has expressed pleasant surprise and gratitude toward the fan reaction. Collins chose the number to honor Matthew Shepard, a 21-year-old gay college student who was beaten, tortured and killed in 1998."
Congrats Jason! We have a feeling the Brooklyn Nets are going to score a few more fans this season (which ends soon) for having signed Collins.
