The San Francisco Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are hosting their annual Hunky Jesus and Foxy Mary Competition online this year. And as usual, the contenders were sacrilicious.
Typically held in an S.F. park to an audience of more than 10,000, the fundraiser for the S.F. Queer Nightlife Fund was moved to Zoom and Twitch this year in light of the current health crisis. Contestants still dressed in queer interpretations of the Prince of Peace and the Holy Mother, but like the at-home version Saturday Night Live, they recorded videos of their performances while in lockdown to play during the broadcast.
This year's pool, due to the digital nature of the event, featured talent from across the country. There were ten contenders for the crown of Hunky Jesus: Mohawk Jesus, Quarantined-With-My-In-Laws Jesus, Skunky Jesus, Beary Sexy Jesus, Black Jesus the Mariah, Heavy Mental Jesus, Jesus in Seattle, Jesus of Jerusalem, Jesusville Jesus, and Holy Golightly.
Five are competing to be this year's Foxy Mary: Mary D'night, Foxy Mary Magdalene, Virgen de Potdalupe, The Other Mary, and Mary Vice.
Sister Roma hosted the proceedings and introduced the contestants with quippy humor like in the case of Mary Vice: "Yes, I'm a virgin. Yes, I'm a ho. We exist! Happy Easter." Or Beary Sexy Jesus, "Be ready to serve and worship him from head to toe."
Sister Roma also provided commentary like in the case of Skunky Jesus, who revealed that his name's "inspiration is the smell of my pits, and the smell of my weed that has clearly gone to my head." Sister Roma replied, "I have never been so grateful to have a mask handy."
The will competition benefit the workers of the Golden City's LGBTQ+ nightlife scene who have been impacted by the pandemic, which is still seeking donations through the S.F. Queer Nightlife Fund. Sunday's airing featured music from DJs Charles Hawthorne, Paul Goodyear, Steve Fabus, Brian Urmanita, and more.
Watch the Hunky Jesus and Foxy Mary Competition on Twitch -- performances begin at 1:04 and 2:04. Then, vote for your favorites by double-tapping or commenting on the contestant's photograph posted to the Sisters' Instagram page. Winners will be announced later this week.
