The Nike BETRUE Collection
Nike is back celebrating Pride Month with its latest BETRUE collection. The line is comprised of four key sneaker silhouettes, as well as T-Shirts and accessories.
Per Nike, they chose the color lavender because it's "a dynamic blending of gender-linked light blue and light pink, is one of the oldest symbolic references in LGBTQ culture." Hints of lavender are detailed throughout all four of the shoe silhouettes in the line.
The pink triangle is also highlighted in the offering, which, according to Nike, was featured due to its complex past in LGBTQ culture. " Originally used to identify LGBTQ individuals during WWII, the triangle was reclaimed in the 1970s by pro-gay activists and was later adopted by the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) in their memorable 1980s-era "Silence=Death" campaign." However, using this symbol--which was used to mark gay men during the Holocaust-- has caused quite the controversy--which you can read about here.
While the sneaker design images were released today, the full collection will be available June 6 to purchase on nike.com and in select retail stores.
