Our Top 10 Looks From the Guo Pei Show
Rihanna's Met Gala fave, Chinese designer Guo Pei, showed her Fall/Winter 2018/2019 couture show during Paris Couture Week at Cite de l'Architecture. The 30-piece collection was inspired by architecture with dresses reminiscent of gothic churches. Stitch work and lace work create fabric replicas of stain glass windows. Structured skirts and bodices replicate the domes and buttresses of different places of worship.
"Garments are moving creations of architecture, and clothing is the first area of space for mankind," according to a Guo Pei Instagram post. The garments suggest "a dialogue between the human body and spatial dimension," reported Vogue.
For a collection that would have been a great fit for the Met's Heavenly Bodies exhibition, Pei's sartorial intersection of gothic architecture and haute couture is refreshing with modern color stories mostly in black and blush.
"Haute couture, if it's really interesting, doesn't have to be close to everyday life, and very few designers have to dare to use their extreme designs to express themselves," Pei said after the show, according to Vogue. "It doesn't have to be wearable like ready-to-wear."
