Shangela Just Walked the Oscars Red Carpet with Jenifer Lewis

Shangela

She’s a professional.

Looks like the people's All Star is back, back, back, back, back again in the spotlight -- and this time, it's at the 91st Academy Awards. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, Shangela Laquifa Wadley, the multi-season RuPaul's Drag Race competitor has made it to the Oscars red carpet, fresh off her dazzling cameo in the nominated film, A Star Is Born and a stellar performance at the Independent Spirit Awards. But she didn't come alone: on the carpet with her was Jenifer Lewis (the "auntie of Black Hollywood," who allowed Shangela to live with her for a time).

And while Lewis looked amazing in a custom copper suit, Shangela showed up as red carpet royalty, wearing a gown by the New York City-based designer Diego Montoya, who has also worked with other Drag Race queens like Sasha Velour, Monet X Change, and more. (He also designed Lewis's look.) Shangela's layered gown featured heavy embroidery cascading down from the bodice and spilling into the multi layered train. It was a moment if there ever was one.

Shangela tweeted that she was going to the awards ceremony early this morning, saying, "I'm up early. I couldn't sleep. I'm like a kid waiting for Christmas morning. This is going to be a historic day for me." While it's unclear whether she went as a nominee or as a guest of Lewis, A Star Is Born is nominated for seven Academy Awards. Could this be the night we watch a drag queen on stage accepting an Oscar, even if she's part of an ensemble cast?

I would like to see it.
