As is the case with many YouTube beauty influencers (besides the incomparable Bretman Rock) James Charles has had an interesting career trajectory. While he's built a massive fan base, and an awe-inspiring path for himself, he seems to just as often be involved in drama as he is with notching new achievements in his resume. The result is that it becomes bittersweet to celebrate his landmark accomplishments, the latest of which is likely his biggest yet.

This weekend Charles revealed to his fans that he is the latest cover star of Vogue Portugal with a cover that's arguably extremely good. Gone is the heavily done, Facetuned look in favor of something truly artistic.

"I"m on the cover of Vogue," Charles tweeted with the image, which he later revealed is one of two covers. "I can't even believe this is real and can't wait for you guys to be able to read the entire issue." The influencer revealed that the other cover would debut later this week. The first has the cover line of "The Beauty of Imperfection." He had teased the cover with a post on Halloween calling it "one of the most exciting announcements of my entire life."

After the initial post, he decided to resurface a comment from a troll sent to him in June. When Charles had posted a series of Vogue cover mockups as a part of the #VogueChallenge, someone had quote tweeted the upload.

"Hi there!" they wrote. "I'm a talent scout for Vogue, me and my team are very glad we found this post because we needed something to laugh at on our lunch break."

On Sunday Charles responded: "Who's laughing now babe," he wrote with a photo of his cover.

And while this should be cause for celebration all around, many have a distaste for Charles given his history. He was previously made to apologize for racist and offensive tweets while he was a face of Covergirl. In 2019 he hemorrhaged millions of followers on YouTube after being called out and canceled by his mentor and former friend Tati Westbrook in a video. Many of the accusations in that video have been called into question and revealed as possible lies seeded by fellow beauty influencer Jeffree Star and YouTuber Shane Dawson.
