Susan Sontag famously said that “the essence of Camp is its love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.”
For Karlie Kloss at the 2019 Met Gala – and for absolutely no one else ever – that meant a simple metallic gold shift dress with puffy black sleeves designed by Dapper Dan for Gucci. But at least Kloss has a good sense of humor about the outfit.
In a new interview with
Vogue, Kloss has taken a look back at her infamous outfit from the 2019 Met Gala, which was themed “Camp: Notes on Fashion.”
“This was the Met Gala that I think broke the internet, but not in a good way,” Kloss said when shown a photo of her in the gold dress. “I still get trolled about this look, where I was ‘looking camp straight in the eye.’”
“And I still get rightfully trolled. I’ll accept it,” she added. “Honestly I deserve that one.”
While many Met Gala attendees miss the mark on the theme every year, it was a very bold move by Kloss to make such a strong announcement about her look on Instagram before revealing it.
In a picture showing Kloss’ eye in a makeup mirror, she wrote in the caption of the post, “Looking camp right in the eye,” just a short time before revealing her “campy” look on the Met Gala carpet.
When we all got to finally see what her version of camp looked like, people were left scratching their heads. Lady Gaga walked the carpet in four different looks, alternating between Barbie Pink and black. Billy Porter showed up head to toe in gold, including fifteen-foot-long golden wings. Janelle Monae wore a Picasso-inspired dress with a large eye on one breast and four large hats on her head. Karlie Kloss wore a gold minidress.
At least we know that Karlie now knows that her look was definitely not serving camp, and that she can laugh about it!
