It’s Barbie’s world, and we’re just living in it!
Throughout the press tour and red-carpet events promoting Barbie, star Margot Robbie was dressed in recreations of the Mattel doll's signature looks, put together by stylist Andrew Mukamal. Now Robbie and Mukamal's memorable looks will be immortalized in a stylish coffee table book titled Barbie: The World Tour, reports Variety.
The Barbie movie was not only a feminist rallying cry but also a love-letter to the doll’s aesthetics and memorable fashion choices, and Robbie’s wardrobe in the lead-up to the movie’s premiere reflected that.
“This book was an idea I had in my living room when I started dreaming about Margot’s wardrobe for the ‘Barbie’ press tour in March 2023,” Mukamal wrote in an Instagram post showing off the book cover. “I could have never imagined just a few months later we’d be in the studio shooting this project with the team of our dreams.”
He closed the post by writing, “This book is a labor of love, dedicated to all the Barbie lovers and fashion fans around the world.”
At every stop on the Barbie press tour — which took the cast to Canada, Australia, South Korea, Mexico, England, and Los Angeles — Mukamal dressed Robbie in outfits meant to mimic looks worn by the actual doll throughout the multiple decades she’s been sold. From a black mermaid-tale dress with matching opera-length gloves to a pink gingham two-piece skirt and top combo, Robbie rocked every look he put her in.
“I was a willing participant because it was in line with everything I wanted,” Robbie told Variety about her vision for how her wardrobe and the film worked in concert. “The ‘Barbie experience’ didn’t just begin when someone sat in their seat and watched the movie, and I didn’t want it to end when the movie finished.”
The book will not only include photos of Robbie wearing the Barbie-inspired looks shot by prominent fashion photographer Craig McDean, but will also feature rare images from Mattel’s archives, designer sketches, Polaroid photos, and Robbie and Mukamal’s own words.
The book’s upcoming release is especially welcome news on a day when the Academy Awards announced that Ryan Gosling is up for an Oscar for his performance as Ken, but Robbie and director Greta Gerwig were both snubbed, despite the feminist film being written, directed, and primarily starring women.
Barbie: The World Tour will hit shelves on March 8 with an afterword by Barbie director Greta Gerwig.
