When it comes to fashion, no one does it like the queer community, so it only makes sense that some of the biggest, best, and most dramatic looks in Met Gala history come from some of our favorite LGBTQ+ stars.
As we get ready for the 2024 Met Gala, you know we'll be keeping a sharp eye on any LGBTQ+ celebs that walk the carpet.
Whether its costume changes, iconic entrances, or just plainly some of the best ensembles The Met has ever seen, every year queer stars have defined what makes the Met Gala great. Here are five of the most iconic and unforgettable moments from queer stars during recent Met Galas!
1. Lena Waithe in 2018
In 2018, the theme was "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination," and first-time attendee Lena Waithe decided to make a big statement by wearing a rainbow flag cape designed by Carolina Herrera.
2. Lady Gaga in 2019
In 2019, Gaga defined camp when she showed up to the camp-themed Met Gala wearing a tent sized pink Brandon Maxwell dress and a matching giant bow. As she walked up the stairs to the gala, Gaga strutted, performed, and made four wardrobe changes all before the event actually started. A true icon.
3. Billy Porter in 2019
The queer men also turned up for the 2019 camp-themed Met Gala! Pose star Billy Porter showed up as camp royalty, decked out in all gold and carried on a bed by six gorgeous, shirtless men in golden face masks. Billy Porter is a GOD!
4. Lena Waithe in 2019
The 2019 Met Gala was obviously a banner year for queers, and that makes sense as the theme was "Camp: Notes on Fashion." Camp is an inherently queer artform, so of course, the queers would dominate. Waithe, again, paid tribute to her community with a suit that highlighted the words "Black Drag Queens Invented Camp."
5. Lil Nas X in 2021
At the 2022 Met Gala, Lil Nas X showed up in a giant gold robe that would've slayed if that was his only look. However, when he revealed that underneath he was wearing a body-fitting gold suit of armor as designed by Versace, which was even MORE iconic!
