Paul Tazewell made cinema history at the 97th Academy Awards after winning the Oscar for Best Costume Design in honor of his work in 2024's Wicked — becoming the first-ever Black man to win an Oscar in the category. Besides chatting with Tazewell on the red carpet, the Tony, Emmy, and Academy Awards winner spoke with Out about his reaction to winning this accolade.

"Winning the Oscar for Wicked is the highest point of my life — my North Star," Tazewell tells Out. "It is my privilege to be the first Black man to receive an Academy Award for Outstanding Costumes."
The designer adds, "I have evolved into that inspiring figure that I had been longing to emulate as a developing designer. I receive this beautiful recognition with immense pride. I dedicate this award to everyone who has the dream to fly."

Earlier on Sunday, Tazewell spoke with Out reporter Ty Cole on the 2025 Oscars red carpet. "It's been mind-blowing and life changing," Tazewell noted. "Having the admiration of others is why I do what I do. To be able to affect and change lives, when I do, while being celebrated for that… [it] has meant the world to me."
He continued, "I pour so much of myself into my work. I hope that I'm telling stories that are moving, beautiful, or at least speak to a moment in a very powerful and meaningful way."
Given that Wicked stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande have been slaying the fashion game during this press cycle, Tazewell also commented on sharing this awards season experience with Erivo.
"She's a very elegant, thoughtful woman who cares a lot about what she represents and what her style is, so carried that acknowledge for her looks for Elphaba," Tazewell noted. "It was something I really loved about working with Cynthia, and that I love about her. To have someone who is so thoughtful on what they wear — bringing it to the event of telling the story of a fantasy character. That's everything I want in designing costumes."
