Couture gowns are the stuff of dreams, one-of-a-kind, handmade, custom-made glittering frocks that some women (and men) reserve solely for their fantasies. But for Madonna, they serve as mere costumes to be worn for mere minutes before being tossed aside like filthy rags. At last night's Super Bowl, her Madgesty packed a whole lot into the football game's intermission. An army of beefy men heaved her out a la Cleopatra before she was revealed standing majestically in a gold cape and headdress--on a throne, of course. She flung that off to reveal a much sexier black form-fitting number complete with studding and thigh-highs, as she dipped back into her classic catalogue and delivered hits like "Vogue" and "Open Your Heart" before launching into her latest single "Give Me All Your Lovin'". After a momentary disappearance she materialized in her final look, a dramatic, glittering floor-length dress, cinched at the waist, for the finale--"Like a Prayer." For those football fans who found the actual game a little lackluster, and were in desperate need of an injection of epic glamour, Madonna didn't fail to deliver, not like she ever would.
