Designers like Jean Paul Gaultier and Tommy Hilfiger have built a career out of their obsessions with stripes. The main difference this season is a widespread swelling of the lines, as evidenced by the menswear on the catwalks of Dolce & Gabbana, Marc Jacobs, and Acne Studios. Amplified to the extreme and repeated to infinity, emboldened stripes may have a hypnotic effect, so remember this rule of thumb: Vertical lines are slimming, and a horizontal striation will broaden any silhouette.
