Carmen Carrera is making a bid to become Victoria's Secret first transgender Angel.
The RuPaul's Drag Race alumn (she made it to the final five in the third season of the show) has undergone a sex reassignment procedure.
Now a stunning woman, Carrera was signed as a professional model by the prestigious agency Elite Model Management. Her next step is to break into the mainstream.
After she appeared in a fashion editorial lensed by Stephen Meisel for W's latest September issue, Carrera became the subject of a petition initiated by her fans to ask the lingerie brand Victoria's Secret to book her as their first trans model.
"By asking Carmen to be a model, Victoria's Secret would show the entire community that they embrace trans patrons," read the petition. "There are so many prejudices toward the trans community, even within the LGBT community, and many trans individuals are not seen as real people. To see a transgender model walk would show that trans women are to be taken seriously and that Angels are selected because of their character and talent. As a brand, Victoria's Secret should feel comfortable marketing towards ALL types of women."
Despite creating some buzz, the petition failed to make an impact. Now, Carrera is taking the matter into her own hands and says she's going to work hard to audition next year.
On Tuesday night, she spoke to Alicia Menenez on Fusion about her hopes of becoming a Victoria's Secret model, and addressed some of the mockery she's faced from other media outlets -- notably a skit that parodied her on Chelsea Lately:
Do you think Carmen has what it takes to follow the footsteps of other successful trans models like Lea T and Ines Rau?
