"I wanted to created a wearable device that looked like a cool watch, first and foremost," says menswear designer Michael Bastian on his new project, the MB Chronowing, a smartwatch he designed in partnership with HP.
In the booming market of portable devices, taste and elegance usually take second place, but Bastian applied his smart-casual vision to a piece of technology that still looks like a real watch.
Inside its 44mm stainless steel case, the MB Chronowing packs a software that syncs with your smartphone (Android and iOS) and notifies you of any incoming mail and social media notifications via subtle vibrations. The first line of each message is displayed on the watch, letting you know whether or not it's worth taking your phone out of your pocket.
And that's just the most basic feature: You can also control your music player remotely, check the stock market, look at the weather updates, and keep scores with your favorite sports team, all from the push of a button. The watch is water-resistant, and has a 7-day power reserve.
The MB Chronowing comes with three interchangeable wristbands (black rubber, perforated brown leather, and olive green nylon) to make it adaptable to any circumstance, even a black-tie event: Bastian also designed a limited-edition version with a luxury alligator strap.
MB Chronowing by Michael Bastian x HP, $349 (Limited-edition with alligator strap: $699). Available on Friday, November 7 at noon EST, exclusively at Gilt.com/mbxhp
