Hello Out readers.

Unfortunately, the saga of Oscar-nominated Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón continues. At the end of January, journalist Sarah Hagithat found some of Gascón's tweets from around five years ago that seem to espouse racist, islamophobic, xenophobic, and other problematic views.

Some of the tweets said things like, "I am so sick of so much of this sh*t, of islam, of christianity, of catholicism and of all the f*cking beliefs of morons that violate human rights," called George Floyd, who was murdered by police, a "drug addict hustler," and complained that the Oscars were turning into an "Afro-Korean festival" when Daniel Kaluuya and Yuh-Jung Youn won awards.

Gascón has offerend a version of an apology (saying "I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt. As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain. All my life I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness."), and deleted her Twitter, but has also repeatedly put out statements, and even did an hour-long interview without any feedback or communication from or with Netflix, the studio that made her movie.

In these continued statements, Gascón defends herself, saying she's not racist and doesn't hate Muslims, and that many of her past tweets were misrepresented or misinterpreted, and that some of the tweets were even made up in order to tank her Oscar chances.

"What a coincidence that I have been trying to send a message of hope to the world for nine months, and just three days ago, coincidentally, I am the worst person in the world," Gascón said. "I have many things to improve in this world, my way of expressing myself is one of them, but I am not going to ask forgiveness for something I am not. Never."

Now, due to her going rogue, Netflix has distanced itself from her, including not paying for her to travel to awards shows this season.

Unfortunately, in a year when we would have liked to be joyfully celebrating the first out trans actor to be nominated for an acting Oscar, this saga is taking the shine off the celebration. The Academy Awards will be held March 2.
