Elsa Will Reportedly Get a Girlfriend in ‘Frozen 3’

Fingers crossed!

Fire up the rumor mill because it's going to be a busy day. According to reports, Elsa will finally be getting a girlfriend inFrozen 3 following a years-long campaign for greater LGBTQ+ inclusion in Disney animation.

With the studio just weeks away from the release of the hotly anticipatedFrozen 2, We Got This Covered reports that the Mouse House is already looking toward the next installment of the billion-dollar film series (which includes a hit Broadway musical). On Monday, the entertainment website claimed that sources say "Disney has plans to give Elsa a female love interest" in Frozen 3.

"[W]e're told it's definitely happening and again," the site reports, "the intention is for Elsa to have a girlfriend in the threequel, confirming her sexuality in the process."

"They did originally want to do so in the second film, but it was ultimately decided that it was too soon," We Got This Covered adds. "According to our sources... the worry was that some countries would ban the movie if they gave her a girlfriend in Frozen 2."

That news comes with some major caveats: After spending six years making a follow-up to Frozen, Disney has yet to put Frozen 3 on its calendar, meaning that this report (if true) might not even be confirmed until 2025. Meanwhile, producer Peter Del Vecho tells the Radio Times there have been "no discussions" about making a third installment, with or without a lesbian Elsa.

"We didn't know there would be a Frozen 2 when we made Frozen, and we certainly have not thought beyond Frozen 2," he told the British magazine. "What was important to us to create a movie that felt tied to the first movie and complete in and of itself. That's how we approached the first movie. I can't think beyond it."

"We haven't even finished this movie yet," he added, "so to even think of the possibility of starting this process all over again seems daunting to me."

This isn't the first time that there's been speculation that the queen of Arendelle would finally get coupled up with a lady boo. After "Let It Go" became an unintentional coming out anthem, Frozen 2 director Jennifer Lee accidentally fanned the gossip flames by expressing her support for conversations about LGBTQ+ representation in Disney movies. That led some to mistakenly assume Elsa would be queer in Frozen 2.

"For me... Elsa's every day telling me where she needs to go, and she'll continue to tell us," Lee told HuffPost in a 2018 interview. "I always write from character-out, and where Elsa is and what Elsa's doing in her life, she's telling me every day. We'll see where we go."

But as Out previously reported, Elsa will not get a girlfriend in Frozen 2. And until Disney confirms the recent report, LGBTQ+ inclusion in a hypothetical Frozen 3 is still just wishful thinking.

But let's hope Disney finally gets on board with the movement to let Elsa be out, proud, and coupled up. Not only do LGBTQ+ fans deserve the opportunity to see their stories reflected on screen, but all of us deserve to hear Idina Menzel sing the hell out of a lesbian cartoon romance.
