Disney’s Live-Action ‘Cruella’ Starring Emma Stone Has a Release Date

Cruella de Vil Emma Stone

You’ll have to wait another year and a half.

Grab your fur coat and dye your hair like you just went through a break up -- Cruella is coming. Disney revealed today that alongside sequels to the (very straight-culture film) Avatar and several Star Wars films, they also have a release date for Cruella, the live-action film that gives the Disney villain her own vehicle, a la the 2014 Maleficent (which is also getting a sequel by the way).

According to the timeline of upcoming Disney films, Cruella is slated for December 23, 2020, meaning you'll be enjoying this tale of miserly, evil capitalism just between the presidential election and unwrapping Christmas presents. Sounds appropriate.

Oscar winner Emma Stone is set to take the titular role of Cruella de Vil, the woman who just wants to kill some puppies to wear a perfect fur coat. Prior to Stone, de Vil was portrayed most notably by Emmy and Tony-winning actress Glenn Close. I, Tonya director Craig Gillespie will direct the film with a script by Jez Butterworth, who co-wrote Edge of Tomorrow.

Though Disney is pretty mum on specifics about the film right now, early word is that the film is set in the 1980s and has a "punk vibe," according to Pop Sugar.

Cruella is one of Disney's most iconic villains and has been a part of both its fairytale soap Once Upon a Time and the Disney channel original movie The Descendants, where she was exiled along with other villains to the Isle of the Lost.
