Angelina Jolie’s Cheekbones Are Back in ‘Maleficent’ Sequel Trailer
‘Mistress of Evil’ also stars Michelle Pfeiffer.
Good morning to Angelina Jolie's cheekbones and Angelina Jolie's cheekbones only. The queen of seductive stares, exposed legs, and general skinny legend excellence has returned in the first trailer for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, the fairy tale follow-up to 2014's box office smash retelling of Sleeping Beauty.
In case you've forgotten what went down in Maleficent, here's a primer: the titular fairy grew up on one side of a medieval kingdom populated by other fairies and magical creatures, feared and bred by the humans who occupied the other side of the neighborhood. But Maleficent wanted to explore, and soon made friends with a young boy who eventually tricked her along with a band of townspeople and cut off her wings (in a harrowing scene that some see as a metaphor for rape) in order to become king. Maleficent decided to pivot to evil (and honestly, fair), cursing the king's daughter at her birth. But that evil transformed into love which she develops a relationship with Aurora (Elle Fanning) as she grew up. Together, the pair took on the evil king, Maleficent for her wings back, and true love's kiss turned out to be a peck on the forehead courtesy of the witch herself -- hello, queer subtext!
The new film sees Maleficent and Aurora clashing with a new monarch, played by Michelle Pfeiffer. The sequel "continues to explore the complex relationship between the horned fairy and the soon to be Queen as they form new alliances and face new adversaries in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within," according to Disney's press release.
The trailer looks suitably magical, mostly because it centers on Jolie's otherworldly face, which I know is digitally enhanced for the role butdamn.
Maleficent: Mistress is Evilis in theaters October 18.
