The first trailer for Greta Gerwig's adaptation of Little Women is here, and anyone who follows me on Twitter should mute me until its Christmas release if they don't want to hear about it. You have been warned.
Gerwig, who wrote and directed 2017's Lady Bird, has taken on the literary classic, casting some of Hollywood's buzziest young actors as well as Hollywood royalty for (another) all white, all cis, all straight retelling of Louisa May Alcott's timeless tale of sisterhood. Groundbreaking! Still, the cast has us gooped, starring Lady Bird's Saoirse Ronan as the fearless Jo March and Harry Potter's Emma Watson as her elder sister Meg (filling in for Emma Stone, who dropped out to do The Favourite press tour), Midsommar star Florence Pugh, and Sharp Objects' Eliza Scanlen round out the quartet as Amy and Beth. Twink icon Timothee Chalamet will play the March sisters' confidante Laurie, and Laura Dern and Meryl Streep will play matriarchs Marmie and Aunt March. Yes, they have all preemptively been nominated for Golden Globes. I'm already shaking thinking about the Oscars' supporting actress category.
In the film's first trailer, we get a glimpse of the familiar story with Gerwig's signature flair. But the real magic comes around the 1:40 mark, when a gorgeously disheveled Chalamet (spoiler alert) professes his love for Ronan's Jo. Will Timothee Chalamet's hair haunt my erotic dreams until the winter, or possibly forever? Only time will tell.
Chalamet warriors, we ride at dawn!
Little Women is in theaters Christmas Day.
