The action-packed superhero film for Netflix doesn't shy away from the feels.
Charlize Theron and her crew are coming for blood in the new Netflix film The Old Guard. Based on the comic of the same name, the feature revolves around a group of immortal warriors who have fought to protect humankind for centuries. Previous trailers have shown the project to be the bloody, action-packed drama one could expect from a film with a synopsis like that, but a new clip premiering exclusively with Out today, shows that the project doesn't shy away from the feels.
Two of the central characters, played by Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli are queer. As immortals, they haven't just been together for years, but centuries. That amount of time with one another, as evidenced in a new clip, makes them more than boyfriends. In the clip Kenzari, whose character Yusuf was a Moor warrior, tries to check on Marinelli who plays Nicky, as they've both been captured.
"I need to know he's okay," he says.
"What is he, your boyfriend?" a captor suited up in SWAT gear responds. The answer ... whew, the answer. It's true poetry.
Neither Kenzari, who is known Stateside for his roles as Jafar in Aladdin and Pierre Michel in Murder on the Orient Express, nor Marinelli are publicly known to be queer.
The pair play alongside Theron, KiKi Layne, Harry Melling, Van Veronica Ngo, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
The Old Guard is out on Netflix July 10. Watch the full clip below.
