Fresh off of an Emmy nomination for his role in Ryan Murphy's Hollywood, Jeremy Pope is already announcing a new project. Though it's in the early stages, the history-making actor is teaming up with writer and director Janet Mock on a new drama called Scandalous!. In the project, Pope will play Sammy Davis Jr.
According to Deadline, who broke the news, the project will tell the love story between Davis and Kim Novak. As an interracial couple of two Hollywood stars, the tale is Romeo and Juliet-esque. Shooting is slated to occur in the fall in Los Angeles and the hunt is still on for the actress that will play opposite Pope. Mock will function as both director and will work on the script by Matthew Fantaci.
While Pope was pushed to a new level of stardom after his turn as Archie in Ryan Murphy's Hollywood on Netflix, he is an incredibly accomplished actor. In 2019 he became the sixth person in Tony history to be nominated for performance twice in the same year. At the time he was up for Actor in a Leading Role in a Play for Choir Boy and for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical for Ain't Too Proud -- The Life and Times of the Temptations. All of this in his debut Broadway season.
Pope was the first Black person to achieve this feat.
Mock has notably also been expanding her purview behind the camera in film and television. After writing for Pose she's gone on to direct for the series as well as other Ryan Murphy projects like Hollywood and The Politician. In 2019 she signed a history-making overall deal with Netflix and is working on a film about journalist Janet Cooke for that.
