We're always excited for new and different types of queer representation!
Today, Hulu announced details about their latest project being produced by American High, who brought films like Big Time Adolescence, The Ultimate Playlist of Noise, and Plan B to the streamer. This latest film, titled Love In Color, looks like it will be one of our new queer favorites!
The film is written by Kirsten King and Casey Rackham, and follows an aspiring young artist in high school. Variety says that "when forced to join her high school track team, she uses it as an opportunity to pursue the girl she's been harboring a long-time crush on. But she soon finds herself unexpectedly falling for another teammate and discovering what real love feels like."
Okay, Hulu, you've got my attention!
King and Rackham say they wrote the script largely based on their own experiences, and their desire to see queer stories that aren't just your typical coming-out narrative. The film is also being directed by filmmaker Sammi Cohen, who says she's excited to explore similar themes.
"It's exciting to be making a movie that's full of queer characters where the story isn't about coming out," Cohen said. "I love a coming-out story, I have one myself, but this is a new kind of comedy and a fresh take on how we tell stories about queer kids in high school."
Now that's what we're talking about! Queer representation that tells new and exciting stories? Queer characters who are already out? A movie "full of queer characters?" Yes please to all of that!
"I needed this movie as a kid," Cohen added. "It means so much to me to be making it now."
Previously, Cohen has directed and showrun several projects for CollegeHumor and PopTV, including the series Hollywood Darlings.
The film is being produced by American High, Animal Pictures, and Depth of Field.
