Everything You Need to Know About 'The Matrix Resurrections'
So what is in store for the highly-anticipated sci-fi sequel?
Now that the stunning first trailer for The Matrix Resurrections has come out, the entire internet is talking about it. It's a return to one of the greatest film universes of all-time, and something fans have been looking forward to since the original trilogy ended in 2003. To gear up for its release, here's everything you need to know about the upcoming film!
Who's returning?
Keanu Reeves is of course returning as Neo (who is back to being called Thomas Anderson in the trailer), and Carrie-Anne Moss returns as Trinity in the movie. Jada Pinkett Smith is also set to return as Niobe, as is Lambert Wilson, who played rogue program The Merovingian.
Who's new?
New actors joining the film include Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, Toby Onwumere, Christina Ricci, Max Riemelt, and Priyanka Chopra-Jonas. None of their roles have been disclosed yet, but the rumor is Abdul Mateen might be a younger or alternative version of Morpheus.
Jonathan Groff and Neil Patrick Harris have also joined the cast!
The new trailer begins and ends with queer actors we love. Neil Patrick Harris opens the trailer as Neo's therapist while Jonathan Groff closes it as a mysterious character who tells Neo they're going "back to the Matrix."
Who's directing?
While The Wachowskis worked together on the original trilogy, Lana Wachowski wrote and directed this one herself. Authors David Mitchell and Aleksandar Hemon, who worked on the show Sense8, also worked with Wachowski on the script.
What's the plot?
The trailer opens with Neo being plugged back into the Matrix, going by the name Thomas Anderson and not knowing that there's more going on. But when he meets the character played by Abdul-Mateen, he gets a chance to wake up all over again and fight for the freedom of humanity. We don't know much else, but the trailer looks like an incredible ride full of the stunning visuals and intense action scenes that the franchise is known for.
Reeves Says it's "a love story."
Keanu Reeves described the screenplay for the film as "a beautiful script that is a love story, it's inspiring. It's another version of a call to wake up and it has some great action." One of the biggest moments in the trailer is Neo and Trinity meeting in the Matrix, feeling like they've met before. We can't wait to see what happens between the two of them.
When does it come out?
The Matrix Resurrections will be released in theaters and on HBO Max on December 22, 2021!
