Pedro Almodovar is making his own Brokeback Mountain, and we cannot wait to see how it all turns out.
The upcoming gay western romance, titled Strange Way of Life, will feature Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal in the lead roles. Elite heartthrob Manu Rios has also been cast in the film in a yet-undisclosed role.
During a podcast interview with At Your Service, Almodovar revealed that the half-hour movie is a "queer Western, in the sense that there are two men and they love each other." The director also disclosed that Strange Way of Life will premiere in May at the Cannes Film Festival.
Almodovar was a guest on the 11th episode of At Your Service, a podcast that was launched by popstar Dua Lipa.
Later in the interview, Almodovar described the film even further:
"It's about masculinity in a deep sense, because the Western is a male genre. What I can tell you about the film is that it has a lot of the elements of the Western: it has the gunslinger, it has the ranch, it has the sheriff. But what it has that most Westerns don't have is the kind of dialogue that I don't think a Western film has ever captured between two men. And now I think I'm telling you a little bit too much."
The desire to make his own gay western film came from Almodovar not being content with the restrictions placed on him when he was being considered to direct Brokeback Mountain. As a result, many fans have been expecting Strange Way of Life to be a much more unfiltered movie when it comes to the gay couple in it.
We'll have to stay tuned for more details about Almodovar's new film, but we're really liking what we're hearing so far!
