Get ready Barbie, there's a new girl in town.
Saturday Night Live's Kate McKinnon has joined the star-studded cast of Warner Bros. upcoming Barbie movie. So far, her role in the film is unknown.
The Barbie movie has long been in the works, at first with Diablo Cody attached to write. She's no longer on the project, and it will instead be written by Little Women and Lady Bird helmer Greta Gerwig and her partner, fellow filmmaker Noah Baumbach. Gerwig is also directing.
For a long time, there were no updates on the film, which has been gestating since before 2018, but recently, several casting announcements have been made. Margot Robbie will be starring in the film as the titular Barbie, and Ryan Gosling is starring opposite her as Ken. Recently America Ferrera and Simu Liu have also joined the cast in undisclosed roles.
We don't know who McKinnon will be playing in the movie, but this writer hopes maybe she'll be the part where you throw away your Ken dolls and have two Barbies get married to each other and practice kissing.
The two have hooked up in a movie before. They starred together in 2019's Bombshell, where they played coworkers at Fox News who eventually sleep together after a drunken night at a bar. So we know they've got great chemistry.
While we have to wait to see McKinnon in Barbie, she has another big project coming out in just a few weeks. Joe vs. Carole is a new series produced by, and starring McKinnon as big cat lover Carole Baskin and John Cameron Mitchell as Joe Exotic, her rival and a private zoo owner.
The series, based on the podcast Joe Exotic, follows the two larger-than-life characters who also appeared in Netflix's hit docuseries Tiger King. The show will follow Baskin as she digs deep to prove that Exotic's zoo is using unethical methods, and Exotic, as he tries to intimidate Baskin into leaving him alone.
Joe vs. Carole debuts on Peacock Thursday, March 3.
