Hulu's Crush Stars Talk Making a Cute, Queer Rom-Com For the Girls
Out chatted with Rowan Blanchard, Auli'i Cravalho, and Isabella Ferreira at the red-carpet screening of the brand new romantic comedy!
Hulu is giving queer girls everywhere the cute, light-hearted romantic teen comedy that they deserve!
Equal parts rom-com and coming-of-age story, Crush follows an aspiring artist and high school student named Paige (Girl Meets World's Rowan Blanchard) as she navigates her newfound feelings for her schoolmate AJ (Moana star Auli'i Cravalho), despite having a long-standing crush on AJ's popular sister Gabby (Love, Victor's Isabella Ferreira). All of Paige's feelings become intensified when she's forced to join her high school's track team, where both Gabby and AJ shine, making for one hell of an interesting and sometimes messy love triangle!
Out got the chance to talk to the film's leads at a red-carpet screening held earlier this week at NeueHouse in Hollywood!
"This movie is for the girls and the gays, and then everyone in between," Moana alum Auli'i Cravalho, who plays AJ in Crush, said when asked about getting to bring on-screen representation, especially for queer girls. "It's fun, it's lighthearted. There's no residual trauma. It's about crushes and first love and knowing the difference between the two. And I think everyone will find a character that they resonate with."
Speaking on starring in a movie that isn't based on the trauma or difficulties of life that many young LGBTQ+ people face in the real world and instead, focuses on queer love and light and happiness, Cravalho called Crush groundbreaking, saying, "it feels really good to tell this story that just revolves around high schoolers and what it means to be a queer high-schooler. It is not something to be ashamed of at all.
"I think when I first read the script, I fell in love with the fact that it revolved around LGBTQ+ characters but the narrative wasn't based on their coming out stories," Ferreira, who plays Paige's first crush Gabriela, added. "It's mainly just a loving rom-com story and I loved it, it was great."
Crush is now streaming on Hulu.
