More bisexual representation in mainstream media – we love to see it!
In 2023, Bradley Cooper is once again doing director-actor double duty in Maestro, an upcoming drama about bisexual conductor Leonard Bernstein and his wife. This is his second-ever movie as a director, following 2018’s A Star Is Born starring Lady Gaga.
The cast of Maestro features Cooper (Leonard Bernstein), Carey Mulligan (Felicia Montealegre), Maya Hawke (Jamie Bernstein), Sarah Silverman (Shirley Bernstein), Sam Nivola (Alexander Bernstein), Alexa Swinton (Nina Bernstein), Michael Urie (Jerome Robbins), Miriam Shor (Cynthia O’Neal), Gideon Glick (Tommy Cothran), and Matt Bomer.
In this first teaser released by Netflix, Cooper and Glick’s characters can be seen caressing each other and then sharing an intimate moment in a hallway. They are then interrupted by Mulligan’s character, who catches them together.
The official logline of the movie reads, “Maestro is a towering and fearless love story chronicling the lifelong relationship between Leonard Bernstein and Felicia Montealegre. A love letter to life and art, Maestro at its core is an emotionally epic portrayal of family and love.”
Though these first scenes of Cooper’s character being with a man included Glick, Cooper had been previously spotted kissing Bomer while filming Maestro. It’s been speculated that Bomer will play Bernstein’s main male love interest in the film.
From Lawrence, Massachusetts, Bernstein won 16 Grammy Awards, seven Emmy Awards, and two Tony Awards over the course of his career. His best-known work was the Broadway musical West Side Story. In 1990, the composer died at 72 years of age in New York City. Last year, his name had a resurgence when the character of Lydia Tár (played by Cate Blanchett) referenced Bernstein as her mentor in 2022’s Tár.
