Long live Jack and Ennis.
A new version of Brokeback Mountain is being produced as a stage play in the West End, with actors Lucas Hedges and Mike Faist attached to the project. Hedges will play Ennis Del Mar (portrayed in the film by Heath Ledger), whereas Faist will play Jack Twist (portrayed in the movie by Jake Gyllenhaal).
Both the critically-acclaimed Ang Lee film and this new stage play are based on Annie Proulx’s Brokeback Mountain short story, which was originally published in 1997. The original story centers around two men in 1963 who are hired to look after sheep at a ranch in Wyoming.
This new West End production will play at a venue called @sohoplace from May 10 to August 12, 2023.
This stage adaptation of Brokeback Mountain was written by Ashley Robinson and Jonathan Butterell. Though this production is not a musical, it will include music by Dan Gillespie Sells. Butterell and Sells previously collaborated on the West End hit musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, which follows the queer character of Jamie Campbell in his journey to becoming a drag queen.
Hedges has starred in films such as Boy Erased, Lady Bird, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Manchester By the Sea, and Honey Boy. In turn, Faist is best known as a Broadway actor who originated the roles of Morris Delancey in Newsies and Connor Murphy in Dear Evan Hansen. Faist also appeared as Riff in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story.
We can’t wait to see how the Brokeback Mountain story will be re-imagined for the theater!
Brokeback Mountain opens May 10 at @sohoplace in the West End.
