'But I'm a Cheerleader' cast: where are they now?
This film featured so many iconic celebs!
Lions Gate Films
Believe it or not, it's been 25 years since Jamie Babbit brought us the iconic But I'm a Cheerleader(BIAC), a coming-of-age queer comedy that deals with homophobia, true love, and the hypocrisy behind conversion therapy.
The plot centers around Megan (Natasha Lyonne), who's sent away to a conversion therapy camp after her friends and family figure out she's a lesbian. Megan herself is in denial, but once she comes to terms with it at camp, she also comes to terms with her growing feelings for her cabin mate, Graham (Clea DuVall).
Scroll through to find out how the stars of But I’m a Cheerleader are doing 25 years later.
Natasha Lyonne
Lions Gate Films
As the breakout star of But I’m a Cheerleader, Natasha Lyonne’s career absolutely skyrocketed ever since the film. Namely, she played another Megan character in an Exorcist spoof on Scary Movie 2, and she carried on with her role as Jessica in the American Pie sequels. She played Sarah in The Intervention — which happens to also feature plenty of BIAC alum — and played Detective Fleur Scozzari in Handsome: A Netflix Mystery Movie.
Speaking of Netflix, you may know her from a few other roles on the platform, including Nicky Nichols in Orange is the New Black and the lead as Nadia Vulvokov in Russian Doll. She also took on the lead role as Charlie Cale in Peacock's Poker Face. Coming up, aside from a second season of Poker Face, she's also in postproduction for American Dream: The 21 Savage Story. Get it, girl!
Clea DuVall
Lions Gate Films
Clea DuVall has also kept herself busy since But I’m a Cheerleader. Her next role was as Georgina in Girl, Interrupted, and she played Jane in See Jane Run. She was Amanda Gronich in The Laramie Project, Linda Kasabian in Helter Skelter, and Jennifer in The Grudge.
Furthermore, DuVall played Sofie in Carnivàle, FBI Agent Audrey Hanson in Heroes, and Wendy Peyser in American Horror Story. She played Emma Borden in Lizzie Borden Took an Ax, and then reprised the same role in The Lizzie Borden Chronicles. Otherwise, DuVall played Jessie in The Intervention, Marjorie Palmiotti in Veep, Sylvia on The Handmaid's Tale, and also guest starred in an episode of Poker Face. Next up, she's in pre-production for a TV show called Day Job. She also came out in 2016.
RuPaul
Lions Gate Films
Over time, RuPaul has created a multimedia empire and a global reality TV franchise since his appearance in the film. He is truly an entity. A moment. Credited as RuPaul Charles in BIAC, he has gone on to create the global empire that is RuPaul's Drag Race and all of its spinoffs and international variations.
Besides that, he has several other acting credits, including Tyrell Tyrelle in Another Gay Sequel: Gays Gone Wild and Rudolph in Ugly Betty. He played Lionel in Girlboss and had a recurring role as Marcel on Broad City. RuPaul also had a starring role as Robert Lee/Ruby Red in Netflix's AJ and the Queen. He played Mike in the movie, a "formerly gay" man who helps out at the conversion camp.
Eddie Cibrian
Lions Gate Films
After appearing in BIAC, Eddie Cibrian has been featured in other movies and also faced a bit of drama. He played Rock Brown in the movie, the "straight" son of camp runner Mary. Following BIAC, Cibian finished up his stint as Cole Deschanel on the soap opera Sunset Beach. He also played Jimmy Doherty on Third Watch and Russel Varon in Invasion. He was Jason Austin on Football Wives and played Coach Diaz on Ugly Betty. He was CSI Detective Jessie Cardoza on CSI: Miami, Captain Ryan Slade in Rosewood, and more recently played Sheriff Pierce on A Christmas Mystery.
Fans of Bravo's Real Housewives of Beverly Hills may also recognize his name as the ex-husband of Brandi Glanville, who was fresh off her divorce when she started the show after he left her for LeAnn Rimes.
Cathy Moriarty
Lions Gate Films
Cathy Moriarty, who played Cibrian's mother Mary in the movie, started her career long before her role in But I'm a Cheerleader. Following that, she played Midge Benzoa in New Waterford Girl, Mrs. Ardis in Prince of Central Park and Patti LoPresti in Analyze That.
After nearly a decade away from the screen, Moriarty played Irene in The Bounty Hunter and Sarah Baldano in Once Upon a Time in Brooklyn. She had a small recurring role as Captain Toni Howard in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Vivian Oliva on American Crime Story. More recently, she had a recurring role as Victoria in Great Kills. Up next, she's in post-production for a couple of shorts, and is in production as Betty in Saint Nick of Bethlehem.
Melanie Lynskey
Lions Gate Films
Melanie Lynskey, who played Megan's lesbian roommate Hilary in the movie, has come a long way since BIAC after already gaining attention for her breakout role as Pauline in Heavenly Creatures and her subsequent role as Jacqueline in Ever After.
Following But I’m a Cheerleader, however, she played Gloria in Coyote Ugly, Rachel Wheaton in Rose Red, and Lurlynn in Sweet Home Alabama. She was Pauline Harnois in Flags of Our Fathers, Ginger Whitacre in The Informant!, Karen in Seeking a Friend for the End of the World and Aunt Helen in The Perks of Being a Wallflower. She was Rose on Two and a Half Men, Annie in The Intervention, and Michelle Pierson in Togetherness. In more recent years, she took on Molly Strand on Castle Rock, June Mindy in Don't Look Up, Kathleen Coghlan in The Last of Us, and Shauna in Yellowjackets. Up next, she's in post production as Heather Morris in The Tattooist of Auschwitz.
Michelle Williams
Lions Gate Films
Michelle Williams might have only had a few minutes of screen time in But I’m a Cheerleader, but she's had a stellar career and is one of the biggest stars from the movie. After it was released, she carried on with her role as Jen Lindley in Dawson's Creek and played Holly in Me Without You. She was Alma in our personal fave Brokeback Mountain, Coco Rivington in I'm Not There, and Wendy in Wendy and Lucy.
In subsequent years, Williams was Cindy in Blue Valentine, Dolores in Shutter Island, Margot in Take This Waltz, and Marilyn Monroe in My Week with Marilyn. She played Annie/Glinda in Oz the Great and Powerful, Randi Chandler in Manchester by the Sea, and Charity Barnum in The Greatest Showman. She took on the role of Anne Weying in both of the Venom movies, Gwen Verdon in Fosse/Verdon, and more recently played Lizzy in Showing Up and Mitzi Fabelman in The Fabelmans.
In 2023, the actress also lent her voice to read the audio for Britney Spears' memoir audiobook, The Woman in Me. Next up, she's in production for a mini-series called Dying for Sex.
