It seems like another nod to LGBTQ+ inclusion in the MCU might’ve been erased.

More queer erasure in Marvel movies?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has had a long history of erasing any nods to LGBTQ+ characters, references, and/or storylines in the franchise’s blockbuster superhero films. The one rare exception is Phastos in 2021’s Eternals, who was established as an out gay character and even had his husband featured in the movie.

On Sunday, November 19, Twitter/X account @CanWeGetToast shared an exclusive report alleging that The Marvels originally included a scene making it clear that Captain Marvel and Valkyrie had a same-sex relationship at some point in the MCU. The report, which is worth noting does not name any sources, reads:

“Captain Marvel and Valkyrie were explicitly together in the past (cut quote: ‘we work better as friends’) but Disney are cowards.”

While the cameo from Valkyrie (played by Tessa Thompson) was kept in The Marvels, the line that established her romantic entanglement with Captain Marvel (played by Brie Larson) was allegedly edited out of the final cut. Valkyrie has been established as a bisexual character in the MCU, but she has yet to be featured with an actual love interest within the franchise.

During an interview back in April 2019, Thompson declared that “it was time” for Valkyrie and Captain Marvel to hook up in the MCU. If this latest report is true, Marvel did shoot a scene that would establish that connection between the characters, but ultimately decided to edit it out of the film.

This has us pretty bummed out, but not entirely shocked.
