Iconic gay director Todd Haynes is coming back with another film we can't wait to see!
Haynes, the director of beloved movies like Velvet Goldmine, Far From Heaven, Carol, andMay December, has cast Danny Ramirez (Top Gun: Maverick) and Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) as a pair of lovers in his next film, an untitled detective movie.
According to Deadline, the script for the film was developed by Haynes and Phoenix along with Jon Raymond.
It will "follow two men, one played by Phoenix, who are intense lovers and leave California for Mexico." Now, Ramirez has been cast as the other man.
Last year, Haynes teased this new film, saying it would be a period piece.
"The next film is a feature that’s an original script that I developed with Joaquin Phoenix based on some thoughts and ideas he brought to me," he told IndieWire. "We basically wrote with him as a story writer. Me and Jon Raymond and Joaquin share the story credit. And we hope to be shooting it beginning early next year. It’s a gay love story set in 1930s LA."
But that's not all, as Haynes said that this might be his most extreme movie yet.
“Joaquin was pushing me further and going ‘no, let’s go further,’” he said. “This will be an NC-17 film.”
We can't wait!
Haynes was recently nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Director for May December at this year's ceremony. The film was also nominated for four Golden Globes. He was also nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Director for Carol in 2015.
